Julie Kuyath was born in New Mexico, and experienced a nomadic lifestyle in her early years before her family settled in England. Fuelled by a passion for creative expression she studied Fine Art at Hull University before pursuing a postgraduate qualification in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design at London Guildhall University. Julie embarked on a career in jewellery design throughout the 90’s supplying avant-garde boutiques in London with her unique designs.
In 2002 she moved to Spain for a lifestyle change, spending the next decade immersing herself in the vibrant culture of Barcelona. Inspired by the city, Julie returns to Fine Art and after experimenting with various mediums discovers collage, enjoying its diversity and textual relief.
The physical elements of her practice, discarded magazines, are symbolically resonant as the pages are regenerated and imbued with opulence by her ability to blend lustrous colour with decoration. She creates with a controlled silent concentration, balancing the creative flow with her meticulous hand-cutting process, never adding pigments, but blending the given colours of the paper until a painterly vigour is achieved. Her collages reflect an effort to create art instinctively following primary impulses, imbuing her work with a peculiar hidden resonance.
In 2013 Julie returned to England where her collages catch the attention of luminaries such as Nick Cave, Iggy Pop and Vivienne Westwood who display her work in their home.
Inspired by her interest in fashion and textiles she ventured into interior design, creating wall hangings and fabrics sourced from her collages.
Julie’s creative vision found further expression in successful collaborations, notably with Coast Fashion, resulting in two exclusive collections of embellished occasional wear in 2022 and 2023, and her mythological wallpapers, Poseidon’s Curse and Seven Sirens are chosen for the Private Dining Rooms of Boston (USA) and Mayfair branches of cult seafood restaurant Saltie Girl. In April 2023 Julie opened her first showroom in the historic East Sussex town of Lewes.
